Teaching Material of Asking and Giving Suggestion

Definition:
*   Suggest means to give a suggestion that is to introduce or purpose an idea or  a plan for someone’s consideration.
*   Suggestions are abstract and can be in form of solutions, advice, plan, and idea. It can be accepted or refused.


Expressions/Gambits

When making suggestions, we often use the following expressions:

Let’s...
Why don’t we...?
We could...
What about...?
How about...?
I suggest that...
You might want to change...
I think...
I don’t think...


Examples of  Asking/Giving Suggestions:

ü  Let’s go to the library.
ü  Let’s go to the movie.
ü  Why don’t you do your homework before going out?
ü  We could eat at home today.
ü  What about eating at the new place?
ü  How about going to Sam’s place first?
ü  I suggest that we call it a day.
ü  You need to change your sleeping habits.
ü  I think you should go and meet her.
ü  I think we should do it this way.

Conversation 1:

Tony : Hello Mery, do you have a free time this Saturday? 
Mery : Hmm, let me think for a while. I think I am free this Saturday. What’s up Tony? 
Tony : Yeah actually I want to invite you to go to the new swimming pool. 
Mery : I’m sorry Tony. I am not interested to go there. The swimming pool is new and I think there will be many people. 
Tony : Yeah I think so. Do you have any suggestion about another place? 
Mery : Yes, I do. Would you like to go to cinema? I heard that is a new movie.
Tony : Good idea. What movie is it? 
 Mery : A romance entitled “Forever”.
Tony : I’m sorry Mery. I don’t like romance movie. 
Mery : That’s okay Tony. What do you think we should watch? 
Tony : How about action movie? 
Mery : Nice idea. I like that kind of movies. 
Tony : Alright Mery, I think it is better for us to watch action movie because we both like it. 
Mery : Of course Tony. See you on Saturday. 
Tony : See you Mery.


Conversation 2 :

Ben: I'm bored! What shall we do?
You: Let's play table tennis.
Ben: No, I hate table tennis.
You: Why do you hate it?
Ben: Because I can't play it very well.
You: Shall we watch a DVD instead?
Ben OK, good idea. Let's watch a James Bond film.
You: No, I don't like them.
Ben: Shall we watch High School Musical 2?
You: Yes! I love musicals

v  Definition of Opinion:

Opinion is including the words of opinion and argument/reasons. Opinion dialogue is a dialog consists of two persons or more who have opinion each others. It can use the expressions, such as in my opinion, in my view, I think etc.  Argument dialogue is a dialog that states the arguments or reasons. It can use the words such as first, second, etc for arranging arguments.

Maintain interpersonal relationship with teachers, friends, and others.
